Ikebana,
the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, is guided by the desire
to create harmony between flowers and their surroundings. Developed in
the 16th century, its name derives from the Japanese ikeru (to arrange) and hana (flower).
With its emphasis on form and balance, ikebana is a sophisticated art
form, embodying aesthetic considerations, knowledge of the natural forms
of plants, and a profound understanding of the space around them, as well as a meditative activity.
An ikebana exhibition, Sogetsu ArtScapes– Japanese Flower Arranging, will be held at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens in the East Garden on Friday, September 23 – Sunday, September 25, 10am – 5pm.
